the third best bar in the world: Szimpla Kert
(Actually it happens to be the very first ruin bar as well.)
In 2012, on the 21st of February the A38 venue ship won Lonely Planet's
award for the best bar in the world. It was a public vote and the
ship won with 13 and a half thousand likes. So we could say that even
the Lonely Planet thinks Budapest has the best bars around the world
- we have two in the first three!
The now world famous, trend setting ruin pub, Szimpla kert won the
third spot on the well-known tourist guide's list with 4480 likes.
The opening of Szimpla kert ten years ago was a milestone in the alternative
life of Budapest. Converting an old, broken down block of flats into
a huge half-open-air cinema and pub, they created a unique atmosphere
in the middle of the city for hosting concerts, theatre shows and
many different kind of cultural events. Szimpla defines itself as
a 'cultural reception space', indicating the intention to embrace
genres and performers off the mainstream.
A38 thanked its supporters on its homepage, and also congratulated
Szimpla, expressing how glad they were that soon after Sziget was
declared the best European festival, Budapest showed that we're in
the forefront of the world in other respects too.
